I would only recommend this for people with a very casual interest in computer gaming or a very specific interest like flight simulators (which appears well served). An Apple Cinema Display could be used as a small (by usual HDTV standards) but impressive screen.Īlso, though gamers quite reasonably scoff at Apple's attention or lack thereof to gaming, it is still possible to buy and enjoy some of the best titles on the Mac. It doesn't take a great leap of imagination to see how this could be modified to work as an HDTV PVR that uses FireWire input from a device like Samsung's SIR-T165 or even a Mitsubishi HDTV set that has FireWire.

It includes pre-release components that implement AV/C protocols over FireWire and an example application that acts as a software emulation of a D-VHS deck. The more interesting possibility is what Apple has hinted at with the developer release of SDK 16 for FireWire. Clearly though the Apple DVD player needs much better deinterlacing and maybe the Panther release will correct this deficiency (I think we can assume the digital audio issues are fixed in Panther).

I'm still mystified that PC users treat it as normal that such innocuous activity should break the OS.

Just try to run WinDVD and a TV tuner app at the same time in WinXP.
Not only is it about impossible to cause it to drop a frame regardless of anything else happening on the Mac (as PC users used to say "true" multitasking, but the shoe is on the other foot now), it is also unphased regardless of what other multimedia application you might have running. It might not be at a price point I would find attractive but I think Apple might be preparing to do an end run around the current configurations using FireWire.įirst it should be mentioned that the current DVD player from Apple is remarkably robust. I don't think I'd use the word "incapable". Last thing you want to add in to the mix is more Drives creating heat.Ĭontinuing a discussion about the speed of the G5 when it is incapable of functioning as a home theater computer seems kinda weird too. Remember G5 2Ghz procs dissipate 97watts each. Most of the G5 case space is due to a novel cooling approach. We're rapidly hitting a point in which we can scale back our current machines using smaller.more powerful devices. People that need more than a Terabyte of Data should probably be using a RAID for redundancy protection. Maxtor just announced a 300GB drive soon you'll be able to have a Terabyte of data within two drives. Of course I prefer external burners since they can be transported from machine to machine. I only need my CD Burner to be reliable.top speed is not something I need. I don't think one external bay is quite the limitation it would have been a couple of years ago. With DVD Burners becoming capable performers in CD Burning. I like computers too much and given the choice of 3 PCs or 1 Mac I'll always take the 3. I know from experience that when you own a Mac most things are more expensive that is if they are even available.įrankly the Apples are too expensive for me now. That same card for a PC would cost me $40.
We needed a Mac video card to run a second monitor here at work and I think the cheapest we could find was $140. The industry price structure has changed significantly even over the past year and Apple has failed to follow. Since I got into PCs a year ago I now own 3 machines (bought 1, built 2) and all for the price of one Mac. If they can design a proprietary fan why can't they fit in a 4th drive bay? I feel like Apple values form over function so while they are aesthetically pleasing I don't consider the new machines well designed. I'm a designer by profession so form factor will always be important to me but as a designer I have to balance that equally with function. I find it ironic that they have designed a case that looks like a museum on the inside but in the real world will have a rats nest of cables on the outside to accommodate the external drives you will need. But since that time they have started to design some cute but very impractical form factors, just look at the iMac.Īnd who would want to be stuck with 1 optical drive bay and only 2 internal 3.5 bays? I know that with Firewire they expect you to use external drives. Now I think the G3/G4 case was one of the best case designs of all time. Guess what? They did design a proprietary fan!

As it turns out the fans have to be removed to install memory so instead of unsightly cables they designed them with direct plugs. I have been an Apple user for about 15 years now but Apple has started to drive me nuts.Ĭase in point: we were looking closely at the case and noticed the gray fans and joked that Apple had probably designed a proprietary fan.
